Projects - Getting ideas on the road

For more than five years, innovative mobility concepts and service solutions have been tested in Sunnyvale, often in collaboration with other mobility providers or startups. Ranging from youth transportation to car sharing and on-demand vehicle services, pilot projects are developed in a highly iterative way to generate maximum customer benefit and learning for the company. With the new focus of Lab1886 being the corporate incubator of Daimler AG we will collaborate even closer with our business unit partners in North America to help them realize ideas quickly.

Collision Guardian – innovative safety app

A safety mobile app is currently being piloted by Mercedes me, in partnership with Lab1886. This innovative app extends Mercedes-Benz safety to all cars, for both drivers and their families, by automatically detecting a collision through data collected from sensors in your smartphone. In case of a collision, the application provides you with emergency assistance, as well as innovative features like roadside assistance and driving analytics.

Ask Mercedes - Augmented Reality in the car

The winning idea from the first US Incubator pilot with MBUSA in 2016-2017 is currently incubated within the Lab1886 Silicon Valley. The app prototype is using Augmented Reality to educate drivers about in-car-features and enhance the customer experience in the car. Since December 4th, 2017, the app is available for download in the US iTunes store and can be used for all new E-Class models in the US.

Peer-to-peer car sharing collaboration with getaround

Peer-to-peer car sharing is a fresh approach to meet the mobility needs of consumers by offering reliable and flexible transportation options. Mercedes-Benz Business Innovation (now Lab1886) has been collaborating with getaround in San Francisco to launch a car sharing pilot in 2016. After purchasing or leasing a Mercedes-Benz or smart vehicle, the users install their getaround profile and make their car available for others to rent.

On-demand transit pilot in sub-urban area with Via

Lab1886 (formerly Business Innovation) partnered with Via in 2015-2016 to offer on-demand transit to suburban Orange County. As an on-demand residential mobility service, the service pivoted from pre-scheduled to on-demand mobile solution. Users were seamlessly being connected with others heading the same way, making the most affordable, convenient and eco-friendly ride in South OC.

Boost provides peace of mind to parents

Modern life creates busy schedules for today’s families. Boost was a youth transportation pilot – ran from 2013 to 2014 - that gave parents reassurance and convenience by getting children where they need to go safely and reliably. Boost provided a world-class experience by using environmentally friendly Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans with well-trained professional drivers and concierges, using new transportation technology.
